AAUA Student Rape: Soldier Arraigned, Remanded in Police Custody

The Nigerian Police, on Wednesday, arraigned a former soldier, Sunday Awolola, who was alleged to have raped a student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), before an Ondo State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure.

Awolola, who was attached to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, was said to have committed the offence at a military checkpoint on the Ikare Akoko-Akungba Road on the 31st of July, 2019.

According to findings by schoolworld, the victim is said to be a 300-level student of the Department of Religious and African Studies of the university.

Following the uproar that the sad incident generated, the Nigeria Army dismissed the suspect and handed him over to the State Police Command for immediate prosecution. He was arraigned on one count charge of rape on Wednesday.


Mr. Adeoye Adesegun, the Police prosecutor, stated that the accused committed an offence contrary to Section 357 which is punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The case could, however, not be heard as the defence counsel, Kayode Idowu, opposed the application brought before the court by the prosecutor.

Adesegun had brought an application to remand the accused, but idowu apposed it and asked the court to adjourn the case to anable him to study and respond to the application appropraitely.

Mayowa Olanipekun, the Magistrate, in his ruling, adjournrd the case till Friday, August 16, 2019, to enable the defence counsel study the application.
