Public primary school teachers in Abia State, has defied the directive by the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), of suspending the three-month-old inductrial action.
Schoolworld gathered that the teachers embarked on strike in May to press home their demand for the non-payment of ten months salary arrears and implementation of their Teachers Salary Scale (TSS).
Journalists, who visited some of the schools in Abia metropolis, reported that few pupils resumed back to school in line with NUT directive but teachers were, however, nowhere to be seen in all the schools visited.
According to a teacher at one of the schools visited, who pleaded anonymity, said “teachers cannot return to classes unless their demands were met.”
She claimed that the state government entered into an agreement with the teachers about two years ago but didn’t fulfill their promises.
