The Akwa Ibom State Government has disclosed that it will close down 1,140 illegal nursery, primary and secondary schools operationg in the state.
Prof. Nse Essien, Commissioner for Education in the state, made this known in Uyo while speaking with newsmen on Thursday.
The Commissioner stated that the move by the state government was to stem the rising cases of unapproved private schools across the state, expressing concern with the way people in the state were establishing schools without proper registration with relevant agencies of government.
“These schools are not approved by the Ministry of Education in the state and the pupils and students are taught under unhygienic conditions where the learning environment is deplorable. We have in the ministry the minimum standards which must be fulfilled before opening any school in the state,” Essien stated.
The Commissioner added by warning that defaulters would be prosecuted by the government if found guilty.
