Odionye Wilson, a thief terrorising workers and students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in Osun State has been jailed for fifteen years.
A statement by the institution’s spokesperson, Abilodun Olanrewaju, stated that Wilson was arrested by the security unit of OAU when the students, who were sitting for an examination, dropped their belongings as is normal for them to do so during examinations.
Wilson, who claimed to be once a student but got rusticated, told the security team during interrogation that he belonged to a 7-man syndicate that specialised in coming to the institution to rob the students and staff of their belongings.
He was later handed over to the Osun State Police Command, “A” Division, Ile-Ife, where he was arraigned.
According to reports made available to schoolworld, Wilson and other at large, on July 31, at about 4:25 pm, at the ICT Centre OAU, stole one Itel S31 handset valued at over N29,000, property of Abayomi Oluwatobiloba; one Ipad phone, valued at N200,000; one Itel handset, valued at N7,000; and one Blackberry phone valued at N45,000 which were totalled at N252,000.
Other items stolen by Wilson and other members of the gang were Tecno Canon X, Tecno 66, Tecno Pop and a phone charger.
In a charge sheet No: MIF/305/2019, Commissioner of Police versus Odionye Wilson, male, aged 23, Magistrate Owolawi found him guilty on counts one, two, and three and accordingly sentenced him to five years each count.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
